Answer engine optimization is the work of shaping content for the surfaces that answer a question before anyone clicks: AI Overviews, featured snippets, People Also Ask, and the follow-up questions assistants generate after a first reply.
The symptom that brings people to AEO
Rankings look stable. Impressions are flat or up. Clicks are down. Pipeline is down more.
That pattern usually means answers are being delivered on the results page. The user got what they needed without opening a site. This is not a penalty and there is nothing to recover — the surface changed.
Being cited beats being replaced
There is a real fear that appearing in an AI Overview cannibalises clicks. In practice there are three states, not two:
- Absent. A competitor is named, you get nothing.
- Cited. You are named as the source. You keep brand presence and capture the users who need depth — historically the ones who convert.
- Replaced. The answer is complete and nobody clicks anyone.
You cannot control which questions land in state three. You can control whether you are absent or cited on the rest.
Map the chain, not the keyword
Start with the buying journey as a chain of questions:
- The category question — what is this, do I need it?
- The comparison — which option, versus what?
- The cost question — what does it cost, what drives the price?
- The risk question — what goes wrong, how long does it take?
- The trust question — who is credible, who do people recommend?
Each link needs a page or a clearly marked section that answers it directly. Answering only link one is why brands appear early in a conversation and vanish at the decision.
Format for extraction
The mechanics are simple and most sites still skip them:
- Answer first. A 40 to 60 word direct answer immediately under the heading.
- Match the shape to the question. Steps get numbered lists. Comparisons get tables. Definitions get one sentence, then context.
- Self-contained blocks. Every section should make sense lifted out of the page.
- Explicit qualifiers. Real numbers, ranges, conditions and dates rather than "fast", "affordable", "leading".
Structured data that earns eligibility
Mark up what you have: Article, FAQPage, HowTo, Product, Breadcrumb. Validate it. Schema does not force inclusion, but missing or broken markup can make you technically ineligible for surfaces you would otherwise qualify for.
Do not create new content first
Most sites already have the substance and present it in a form no answer engine can extract. Restructuring the pages you have is faster, cheaper and usually produces the first wins. New content comes after the existing library is extractable.
Measure at the question level
Track, per priority question: are you in the AI Overview, do you own the snippet, do you appear in People Also Ask, and who holds the positions you do not. Rank tracking alone will not show you this.
How AEO and GEO fit together
AEO is about answer surfaces inside search engines. GEO is about being retrieved and quoted by assistants anywhere. The content work overlaps by maybe 70 percent; the measurement and the off-site corroboration differ. Doing AEO well makes GEO substantially easier, because both reward the same clarity.
Our AI Search Optimization service runs this end to end, from question-chain mapping to snippet ownership tracking.
