Entity SEO: Why AI Ignores Brands It Cannot Identify

If your name, category and facts differ across the web, you are an ambiguous entity — and ambiguous entities do not get recommended. Here is how to fix it.

Search engines and language models do not think in keywords alone. They resolve things — companies, people, products, places — into entities with attributes and relationships. If your entity is unclear, you are hard to recommend, no matter how much content you publish.

What an ambiguous entity looks like

  • The legal name, trading name and logo wordmark differ, and no page says they are the same thing.
  • Directory listings carry an old address, an old phone number and a former category.
  • Two founders describe the company differently on their own profiles.
  • The site never states plainly what the company does in one sentence.

Each inconsistency reduces confidence. A model that is not confident about who you are will name someone it is confident about.

The four inputs to entity confidence

  1. Canonical facts. One name, one description, one service list, one location set, one founding date, one set of people.
  2. On-site markup. Connected Organization, Person, Service, WebSite and Breadcrumb schema, with `sameAs` links to verified profiles.
  3. Off-site agreement. Directories, review platforms, social profiles and press mentions repeating those same facts.
  4. Relationships. Clear links between the company, its people, its services and the places it serves.

How to fix it in four steps

Step 1: Audit every mention

Find every place your brand, founders and services are described. Site pages, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, X, directories, review sites, press. Record what each says and flag conflicts.

Step 2: Write the canonical fact sheet

One document, one version of the truth: exact name, one-sentence description, category, services, locations, founded, key people with roles, contact details, official profile URLs. Everything downstream copies from this.

Step 3: Build the schema graph

Publish it as connected JSON-LD. Organization with `sameAs` to every verified profile. Person entities for founders and authors. Service entities for what you sell, linked to the organisation. Breadcrumbs on every page so hierarchy is explicit.

Step 4: Roll out corroboration

Update every external profile to match the fact sheet, starting with the ones that already appear in AI answers or search results for your brand name. Consistency across many sources is what raises confidence.

Why this is the highest-leverage AI-visibility fix

Content improvements compete with everyone else's content improvements. Entity clarity is usually uncontested — most competitors have not done it. It is also cumulative: once your facts agree everywhere, every future page, mention and review reinforces one identity instead of splitting between three.

How to know it worked

Ask an assistant to describe your company and list your services. Compare the answer to your fact sheet. Repeat monthly. The description should converge on your own wording, and errors should stop reappearing.

Our Entity SEO service runs the audit, the fact sheet, the schema graph and the corroboration rollout as one engagement.
